FAQ

Questions people ask before they buy.

If yours isn't here, call us and we'll answer it directly: 262-977-7743 or sales@smartasset.biz.

What's in the $250 starter kit?

One gateway (your choice of mobile or stationary) and five equipment sensors, with Field and Equipment Tracking, Shop and Mechanic Tracking, and Telematics turned on from day one.

Do dash cameras come with the starter kit?

No. Dash cameras need hardware installed in the cab, so we set those up with you directly. Call us and we'll size that separately.

What if I have more than five machines?

Call us. We'll size a system to your whole fleet, quote it, and take payment over the phone, including extra gateways and dash cameras.

How long does setup take?

Sensors mount and pair the same day the kit arrives. No wiring and no shop visit required for the starter kit. Dash cameras plug into the vehicle's diagnostic port and most people self-install one in 15 to 20 minutes.

Can SmartAsset track equipment too small for GPS?

Yes. That's what Field and Equipment Tracking is built for. A GPS tracker makes no financial sense on a backpack blower that costs under $1,000, so most systems simply can't see chainsaws, blowers, trimmers and other light equipment. Our sensors make tracking that gear viable, so you can service it on actual hours and know what's actually being used.

Can you track trailers, attachments and other unpowered assets?

Yes. Battery powered trackers cover trailers and attachments, and equipment sensors capture runtime on powered gear of any size, from a line trimmer to an 18-wheeler. Wired installs are available for heavy equipment.

What counts as a gateway?

Whatever fits how you work. A mobile gateway rides in the truck, a stationary gateway mounts at the yard or shop, the dash camera can double as the gateway in vehicles that have one, and the mobile app can act as a gateway too.

We already have a GPS provider. Do we have to rip it out?

No. SmartAsset runs in parallel with your existing telematics provider if all you want is light equipment tracking. Plenty of customers start that way and expand later.

How is this different from the big fleet platforms?

Platforms like Samsara and Motive were built for over-the-road trucking first, then extended into everything else. SmartAsset was built by a former landscape business owner for his own company, so equipment, crews and job sites were the starting point, not an add-on. We're privately held with an in-house, US-based development team, which means new capabilities ship in weeks, not quarters, and you get direct access to the people who build the product.

What happens to my contract when I add cameras or sensors later?

Nothing resets. It's one contract with everything bundled. Adding hardware later doesn't start a new multi-year term.

What does my crew have to do?

By default, nothing. Location, runtime and utilization are captured automatically without asking your team to touch anything. Barcode workflows are there when you want your process to capture more, like labor by job or repair time, and even then it's a scan, not a form.

Does SmartAsset integrate with the software I already run?

We integrate with Aspire, QuickBooks, Acumatica and Trimble Viewpoint Vista. The Aspire integration runs deep: employee lists and job lists pass straight in, so there's no duplicate data entry, and members of our team came from Aspire.

How does the in-cab driver coaching work?

The dashcam speaks up in the cab the moment it detects phone use, drowsiness, or a missing seatbelt. Repeat behavior enrolls the driver in training automatically through the driver app. A manager only hears about the most severe cases. The full picture is on the Dashcam & Telematics page.

What does a barcode scan actually do?

Whatever you decide. Scans can start a repair, open a job, assign equipment, log labor, or run an inspection. You define what the scan means and SmartAsset turns it into data.

Can I job cost down to fuel and labor?

Yes. Scan a job, then scan the equipment used on it, and runtime, labor and fuel post to that job automatically.

Who is behind SmartAsset?

SmartAsset is built by Right Track, Inc., based in West Bend, Wisconsin, founded by a former landscape business owner who has spent over two decades building software for the green industry. The platform tracks more than 10,000 pieces of equipment today. On the telematics and camera side we partner with Forward Thinking Systems, a SOC 2 compliant provider with over 20 years of in-house hardware, firmware and software experience and 24/7 support.
